With all of the bruhaha over God in our “Pledge of Allegiance” I think people are worrying about the wrong things. There are more important things we need to be concerned with from the same pledge (the God portion was not in the original version and was put there MANY years after the pledge became popular by an ACT of congress).

“with Liberty and Justice for All.” This is where Americans should be putting their energy. The fact is that in 2007 alone there were over 30,000 new laws enacted by the various governments within the US. At that rate in 34 years there will be well over 1,000,000 – that’s one million folks – new laws. For a child born today, by the time they retire there will be over 2,000,000 – that’s two million – new laws for them to deal with.
Now, granted that is for all the towns, counties and states in the USA as well as the federal government. However, people move when they change jobs, retire, travel for business or travel for vacation. So which of those 30,000 laws will be affecting you?

I don’t know about you but I don’t have time to learn all the laws currently on the books let alone the new ones. At the time I write this I am well into my 40’s and have had the occasional need for an attorney over the years. One time for a business I was starting, once for a traffic violation, for my divorce and several times for child custody and support. I guess I may have been lucky to only need a lawyer for a few things. I personally don’t think I was so lucky. Have you ever tried to decide which attorney to use out of the hundreds, if not thousands (it depends on where you live), of lawyers in the phone directory?

Some people are fortunate in that they can afford to have at least one attorney on retainer. A retainer is where you pay amonthly fee and pretty much have them at your beck and call. Some people are in a situation where they have access to public defenders who are paid by the government to help those who cannot afford an attorney (but due to limited funding only certain types of legal problems). I fell in the middle – no lawyer on retainer and I made too much money for public defenders. There is another group of fortunate souls – those who have family or friends who are attorneys and will help out gratis. I wasn’t that fortunate so I had to close my eyes and flip a coin to find an attorney to help me and hope I had enough money to pay them. That is not a good position to be in nor is it a guarantee of a beneficial outcome.

This is not “Justice for All”. “Justice for All” is equal access to the legal system on a level playing field. Most Americans do not have this type of access to the legal system, so what happens is they just believe that what happens happens because they do not know where to turn to get good legal help.

This does not apply to individuals alone! It also applies to small businesses, self-employed people, people who work from home – basically everyone. If you are wondering what you can do to level the playing field there is a service that can help you.

In this blog I will be covering various events, situations and more notable new laws that may affect you or your business and how you can make use of a PrePaid Legal Service plan to your benefit.
